Moreover, many peptides had "deletion sequences"—peptides missing one or more amino acids from the chain. For example, a growth hormone secretagogue peptide sequence requiring 29 amino acids might be sold with only 27-amino acids. These truncated peptides may be biologically inactive, or worse, act as competitive antagonists (blockers) at the receptor site, negating any therapeutic benefit.
